Some recently provided challenging applications and innovative solutions:
Application: open channel flow measurement of storm flows.
This application was for storm flow measurement in a channel 4m wide with effluent falling some 5m at right angles to the channel giving only 20m of straight lengths in which to make a measurement of flow accurate enough to meet with the requirements of the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive.
This application is being measured by using a combination of look-down ultrasonic to gauge the depth of water in the channel and channel mounted electromagnetic sensors to gauge the velocity of the flow. These two readings are then combined to equate Q=AV in a signal processing controller to give an accurate and repeatable flow measurement to comply with the SEPA discharge consent. Accurate low level flow is enhanced by an open-ended downstream weir arrangement.
The system was selected, installed, commissioned, and tested by Processplus engineers. Product and operator training was also provided.
Application: Open channel flow measurement for chlorination control:
This application was for flow measurement on water treatment full flow to treatment and had to provide accuracy good enough for chlorination control. There was no opportunity to utilise full bore flow measurement as the main flow was fed in an open channel feeding complex pipe arrangements which couldn’t be shut down and were tested as unsuitable for clamp-on technology.
After exhausting the potential locations for electromagnetic flow meters and various clamp-on devices, multi-path transit-time ultrasonic solution with lookdown ultrasonic’s were deployed. This measurement technique is well documented and conforms to BS ISO6416, formerly BS3680 part 3E and was particularly well suited to the rectangular open channel due to the constancy of level and sensor positioning allowing an ongoing covering of a majority of velocity paths.
This complex measurement system was selected, engineered, installed, commissioned and tested by Processplus to meet with the accuracy standards required by Scottish Water. Product and operator training was also provided.
